A Statement on the Passing of General Colin L. Powell from Natalye Paquin, President & CEO of Points of Light

Oct 18, 2021

Points of Light joins millions in celebrating the life of General Colin L. Powell, a decorated military veteran and life-long public servant. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to civic life in its many forms.

His more than 30-year military career in service to the United States underscores the dedication and heroism of our nation’s armed forces and the value of that service was recognized with two of our nation’s highest honors, the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Beyond military service, General Powell’s roles under former Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush underscore the importance of civic engagement through public service.

His groundbreaking role as the first Black U.S. Secretary of State has inspired countless other people of color to see themselves in leadership positions.

General Powell’s generously gave his support to Points of Light over the years, most recently as an Honorary Committee Member of The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards Celebration last month, and was an ongoing champion of civic engagement.

He was a bright light in our world and we hope his legacy will continue to inspire all of us to become deeply involved in our communities and country.
